Fafarazzi Fall-Out

January 23, 2008

Man do people love fantasy sports…err fantasy celebrity “sports.”

Case in point: the tragic Heath Ledger news breaks at 4:45 pm ET today and shortly thereafter, so too does the Fafarazzi site. They issued an incredibly weak apology (see above thumbnail) which was essentially on their site for nine hours which incorporated the following: “As you may have heard, Heath Ledger passed away today…” – huh?

OF COURSE THEY HEARD WHICH IS WHY THEY ALL CAME TO PICK UP HEATH FOR THEIR TEAM TO GAIN MORE FANTASY POINTS!

Not good for the folks at Fafarazzi. Not good. Luckily for them there’s really no other competitor on their level…yet (according to my wife, at least). So will there be an exodus of users? Probably not.

So while I don’t expect to see extreme negative PR fall-out with this meltdown (as say a Salesforce.com unexpectedly shutting down at 3:00pm ET on a Monday), I do think it’s worth a response from the founders, Chris and Todd. No need to hide on this one fellas.

Get out there with a formal acknowledgment and explain what you plan to do to prevent major shutdowns from happening again. Talk to local press, trade press, business press – whatever it takes. Do that and assure your users today, because tomorrow, they may no longer be around. They’ll be with a competitor.

I have been trying to log on for 5 hours and have not been able to, it is very upsetting I haven’t been able to get on the site.
